Skate 3 recomp is a native PC port of the 2010 Xbox 360 game; ReSkate is a mod platform for the new free skate. No shared code — how they differ.
Skate 3 Recomp vs ReSkate: Old Port vs New Mod Platform
Skate 3 recomp and ReSkate are two separate community projects with no shared code. The first is a native PC port of 2010's Xbox 360 Skate 3 — you supply your own disc dump. The second is an open-source mod platform for EA's new free-to-play skate. — you supply your own Steam copy. They are complements, not competitors: one preserves the old game, the other extends the new one.
ReSkate is a third-party open-source mod platform for skate., not an EA product; this site is an independent fan wiki with no ties to EA, Full Circle, Dingo-Shenanigans, or Thunderstore. Version-sensitive claims below are marked as of v2.0.2 (2026-07-24) for recomp and as of v1.1.3 (2026-10-06) for ReSkate — both projects move fast, so confirm on the linked Releases pages before downloading anything.

A dusk city skyline (stock photo, not a game screenshot). Old and new skate cities are the theme both projects share — their codebases share nothing.
What Skate 3 Recomp Actually Is
Skate 3 recomp is an unofficial native recompilation of the Xbox 360 version of Skate 3 for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Instead of emulating the console, it statically recompiles the game's code into a native PC program — built on the ReXGlue SDK, which converts Xbox 360 PowerPC code into portable C++ that runs natively on modern platforms. The maintained repository is mchughalex/skate3recomp.
Official source: skate3recomp on GitHub — "An unofficial native recompilation of the Xbox 360 version of Skate 3, supporting Windows, Linux, and macOS. The project does not include Skate 3 retail game files."
Key facts, all from that repository and its Releases page (checked 2026-10-07):
- You must bring your own game. The project ships no retail files. Point its installer at your own legally obtained Xbox 360 copy ("Select ISO"), let it extract the game files, and press Start Game. The same rule covers DLC.
- Release history is short and public. First public release v1.0.0 landed 2026-06-04; the latest seen on 2026-10-07 is v2.0.2 (2026-07-24). Always download from that Releases page, never a mirror.
- v2.0.0 added a native renderer built on Direct3D 12 and Vulkan, replacing the emulated Xbox 360 GPU. The project's own figures claim more than double the frame rate at roughly a quarter of the GPU power draw — treat those as the author's measurements, not independent benchmarks. You can hot-toggle between Native and Emulated renderers with F5.
- Controller-first input. An Xbox controller is the preferred input; PlayStation, Switch, and generic pads work through an SDL backend, and keyboard controls can be enabled in the settings menu. The macOS ARM build is explicitly experimental. There is also an earlier bring-up branch, portingpete/skate3-recomp — and its own README tells visitors to use mchughalex's repository because it is more up to date.
Neither recomp repository includes game files, and both say so plainly. Do not ask the projects for files, and do not download "pre-installed" copies from mirrors — those are the classic malware vector for recomp-style projects.
What ReSkate Is, in One Paragraph
ReSkate is a GPL-3.0 open-source mod platform for the new skate.: a launcher plus an injected runtime plus dedicated servers, built around one pinned Steam build (25414733, unchanged from v1.0.0 through v1.1.1). It lets you play offline without EA servers, host your own lobbies and servers, and install Thunderstore mods — but you still need your own Steam copy of skate., which is free. Start with what ReSkate is and the install guide.
| Skate 3 recomp | ReSkate | |
|---|---|---|
| Target game | Skate 3 (2010, Xbox 360) | skate. (2025, EA free-to-play) |
| What it is | Native PC port via static recompilation | Mod platform: launcher + runtime + servers |
| You must own | Your own Xbox 360 copy (disc dump) | Your own Steam copy of skate. (free) |
| Platforms | Windows, Linux, macOS (ARM experimental) | PC via Steam (as of v1.1.3, 2026-10-06) |
| Mods and servers | No mod platform; settings, DLC folder, portable saves | Thunderstore mods, dedicated servers, park editor |
| Latest seen | v2.0.2 (2026-07-24) | v1.1.3 (2026-10-06) |
| Code shared | None — separate projects, separate authors | None |
Why People Mix Them Up
Three honest reasons the confusion exists — and why none of them means the projects are related:
- The names rhyme. "Skate 3 recomp" and "ReSkate" look alike in a search box. One recompiles an old game; the other name just happens to start with "Re."
- The Skate 3 map mod bridges the two worlds. ReSkate's headline day-one mod, Full Skate 3 Map by zeex64, puts Port Carverton inside the new skate. engine (18,700 downloads in the 2026-10-05 snapshot). For the map, read the map port guide instead of installing recomp.
- The same community press covers both. The skatemods launch writeup for ReSkate explicitly places it in a lineage of player-kept-alive games — and names the Skate 3 scene that recompiled the 2010 console game into a native PC port as part of that history. Same reporters, same modding circles, different code.
If it asks for your Xbox 360 files, it is recomp. If it asks for your Steam copy of skate., it is ReSkate.
Which One Should You Pick
Most returning skaters do not have to choose — the projects install side by side and touch different games:
| Your goal | Pick | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Play the original Skate 3 campaign, Hall of Meat, and Port Carverton as released in 2010 | Skate 3 recomp | Its Releases page, with your own disc dump ready |
| Play the new free skate. offline, with mods, or on your own server | ReSkate | Install guide, then the mod install walkthrough |
| Skate the old Port Carverton city inside the new game's engine and multiplayer | Neither binary — get the map mod | Skate 3 map port guide |
| Tinker with physics, practice tricks in slow motion | ReSkate plus its Trainer | Trainer coverage in the best mods roundup |
A practical note: recomp's native renderer targets efficiency on older hardware, while full-city ReSkate map mods are the heaviest content in that ecosystem (the 1.0.2 VRAM streaming fix exists because low-VRAM cards crashed loading them).
Ownership and Safety Notes
Both projects refuse to ship game files, and both say so in their own words — that is the single most important trust signal they share:
- Recomp states it does not include retail game files, requires your own legally obtained Xbox 360 copy, disclaims affiliation with EA, Microsoft, Xbox, and the upstream ReXGlue project, and asks you not to request game files.
- ReSkate states it is a fan project not affiliated with or endorsed by EA or Full Circle, requires your own Steam copy, and never asks for your EA account. As of 2026-10-07, EA has made no public statement about ReSkate — the project's own FAQ line about bans is the project's claim, not EA's position. The full breakdown is in the safety guide.
Neither project is a piracy tool by design, and neither page on this site will help you bypass paying for a game — though note the asymmetry: skate. itself is free on Steam, while recomp only makes sense if you already own the decade-old console game.
FAQ
Do Skate 3 recomp and ReSkate share any code? No. No source for either project indicates a code relationship. The recon pass for this wiki confirmed recomp as a separate project with its own SDK lineage (ReXGlue) and its own authors.
Can I install both on the same PC? Yes. They target different games, live in different folders, and do not interact. Keep each one updated from its own official Releases page.
Does the Full Skate 3 Map mod make recomp obsolete? No. The mod skates a ported Port Carverton inside the new game; recomp plays the actual 2010 game with its campaign, physics, and modes. Many players use both.
Which recomp repository is the real one? The mchughalex repository — the early portingpete branch says exactly that on its own front page. Check the Releases page, not a mirror, before downloading.
Where do I follow each project? Recomp lives on its GitHub repository and Releases page. ReSkate lives on its GitHub repository, the Thunderstore ReSkate community, and a Discord community near 28.7K members and 6.6K online as of the 2026-10-07 research pass — expect today's numbers to differ.
